Biomedical Engineer
Overview
The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical engineering services across the NNUH hospital and affiliated facilities. The role includes the planning, management, maintenance, and safe operation of all medical equipment used within the organization. The Biomedical Engineer ensures that all medical devices are maintained according to manufacturer recommendations, regulatory standards, and NNUH hospital policies to guarantee safe and effective patient care.
The position also involves troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, and supporting sophisticated medical equipment and systems, including devices integrated with computer operating systems and hospital networks. In addition, the Biomedical Engineer provides technical training and guidance to clinical staff regarding the proper operation and care of medical equipment.
The role may require on-call availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety and operational readiness of all acquired medical equipment, including loaned devices, before use in patient care areas.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and calibrations within the hospital’s medical equipment management system.
- Perform and document preventive maintenance activities and periodic performance verification in accordance with the hospital’s Medical Equipment Management Plan and manufacturer recommendations.
- Respond promptly to equipment failures, urgent corrective actions, hazard notices, and device recalls to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
- Monitor and prioritize incoming work orders based on equipment criticality and clinical impact.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and calibrate a wide range of biomedical equipment and systems.
- Coordinate and supervise work performed by external service providers, contractors, and vendors, including maintenance, calibration, installation, and validation activities.
- Provide technical support and user training to clinical staff on the proper operation, handling, and basic troubleshooting of medical equipment.
- Demonstrate correct setup, testing, calibration, and operation of patient care devices when required.
- Utilize calibration and testing equipment according to manufacturer specifications, hospital procedures, and applicable standards.
- Maintain effective working relationships with clinical departments, support services, and external vendors.
- Support equipment installation, commissioning, acceptance testing, and inventory management activities.
- Participate in planning and evaluating medical equipment procurement projects and replacement programs.
- Prepare and review technical specifications for medical equipment tenders and purchasing requests.
- Participate in technical evaluations of vendor quotations, tender submissions, and product compliance with hospital requirements.
- Coordinate with purchasing and end-user departments during the selection, procurement, and commissioning of medical equipment.
- Ensure purchased medical equipment complies with applicable regulatory, technical, safety, and hospital standards.
- Provide technical recommendations regarding equipment selection, standardization, lifecycle management, and cost-effectiveness.
- Assist in budget planning for medical equipment acquisition, maintenance contracts, and replacement planning.
- Monitor and maintain adequate inventory levels of biomedical spare parts, accessories, and consumables required for maintenance and repair activities.
- Coordinate the ordering, receiving, storage, and tracking of spare parts to ensure availability and minimize equipment downtime.
- Maintain accurate records of spare parts usage, stock levels, and replacement history within the inventory management system.
- Evaluate spare parts requirements for preventive and corrective maintenance activities and provide recommendations for stock optimization.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of spare parts in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and hospital procedures.
- Coordinate and collaborate with external agencies, vendors, regulatory authorities, and service providers regarding medical equipment maintenance, compliance, inspections, technical support, and related healthcare technology activities.
- Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, safety regulations, and quality standards.
- Perform any additional duties assigned by management.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Biomedical Engineer in a hospital or healthcare environment.
- Strong knowledge of healthcare systems, hospital operations, and medical equipment management practices.
- Experience in troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and preventive maintenance of medical equipment.
- Experience in preparing technical specifications and evaluating medical equipment tenders.
- Good computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
